Inca Culture

The Art & Culture of The Incas
Around the year 1200 A.D. my ancestors, the Incas, came down from high in the Andes mountains to conquer the scattered tribes throughout the South American continent. They imposed their rule, their highly organized form of government and their spirituality on the weaker, less organized people of what is now Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and parts of Chile and Argentina.

Civilization in America: The Incas
The Incas began to expand their influence in the twelfth century and in the early sixteenth century, they exercised control over more territory than any other people had done in South American history. The empire consisted of over one million individuals, spanning a territory stretching from Ecuador to northern Chile.

The Civilization of the Incas
The Inca society was very organized. Everyone understood his or her position in the social pyramid. A large site, easy to read, with lots of illustrations.

The Conquest of the Inca Empire
We will focus on the events which led to this sudden downfall of the Incas. Three individuals play a crucial role: the two half brothers Atahualpa and Huascar and the Spanish conqueror Francisco Pizarro.

Conquistadors - Peru
Capac cared for all the people of the empire, making sure there was surplus food so that everyone could be fed, and establishing the network of roads and storehouses so that famine or death in one part of the empire could be alleviated by surplus from another.

Descendants of the Incas
Inca weaving traditions and family ties. A culture of people living today near the city of Cuzco, Peru. It was the capital of the Inca empire and is close to Machu Picchu. A good site to learn about Inca traditional weaving.

Frozen In Time
In the icy mountains of Peru, a 500-year-old mummy is found. A story in Time For Kids.

Geometry Step by Step from the Land of the Incas
It provides an eclectic mix of sound, science, and Incan history intended to interest students in Euclidean geometry. The site includes geometry problems, proofs, quizzes, puzzles, quotations, scientific speculation, and more.

Inca Investigation
Look at the maps and artifacts and draw some conclusions yourself about how the Incas lived.

Inca Mummies: Secrets of a Lost World
Unwrap the mummies, layer by layer, and take a rare glimpse into the ancient Inca world. Watch a short documentary about the excavation at Puruchuco, a hidden Inca cemetery, and find out how the race to save hundreds of mummies was won.

Inca Myths, Culture, Pantheon
A lovely Flash multimedia presentation. Click on the right ray of the sun to procede. Takes a while to download, but worth the wait. Exercises follow the presentations.

Incas
The Mesoamerican civilization known as the Inca Empire was located in the Andes mountains of what is now Peru, Ecuador, and Chile. It's earliest beginnings date to 1100 A.D. when a small warlike tribe began to move into the valley of Cuzco.

Machu Picchu
This is one of the great treasures of the world, up there with The Great Wall, the Coliseum, Pompeii and like those places, nothing can prepare you for being there.
