Maps and cartograms of the 2004 US presidential election results
The blue may be small in area, but they are large in terms of numbers of people, which is what matters in an election. We can correct for this by making use of a cartogram, a map in which the sizes of states have been rescaled according to their population. From the University of Michigan. If you like these maps, look at this one of the whole world.

National Atlas of Canada
Learn about Canadian communities while you browse through this useful site. Have your homeschool group help with this project to help portray what is going on in your community. En Français.

Coordinates

Astrodienst
Locate the latitude and longitude of any city in the world just by typing in the city name and selecting the region of the world (or whole world) to limit your search.

Latitude
In 1440, without latitude, European sailors only knew a little of the world. 76 years later, able to navigate using latitude, explorers could circumnavigate the globe. How did this come to be?

Latitude and Longitude
I've seen those curvy patterns on globes, Lulu! But I'm not sure what they're for!

Geocaching - High-tech Treasure Hunting
My children are now 14 and nine, and they have become expert users of our handheld GPS. They hardly realize that they've learned essential math and mapping skills or that they've become keen observers of nature. Best of all, they are learning the value of working together and are making memories that do not include television and video games. By Lori Diehl, HEM M/A 07

Letterboxing of North America
An intriguing pastime combining navigational skills and rubber stamp artistry in a charming "treasure hunt" style outdoor quest. A wide variety of adventures can be found to suit all ages and experience levels.

Orienteering Ë the Sport of a Lifetime
Orienteering is the sport of navigation with map and compass. It's easy to learn, but always challenging.

Treasure Hunt
You can keep a large group of kids amused for hours with a few, well planned, treasure/scavenger hunts. Once they've been on one hunt, the kids may decide to plan the next one by themselves.
