Family Stories

Carol Narigon's Unschooling Curriculum
In case an unschooler is required to submit a curriculum, here is one Carol wrote, and has generously offered as a model for other families in need.

Essays by Heather Madrone
Heather Madrone writes a series of changing essays about her family's homeschooling life, including Unschooling? Unlikely!

How Our Daughters Helped Plan Their Education
We trusted out daughters' judgement. They threw out all color-inside-the-lines material very early in their education. "We don't need that. We draw and color our own pictures." Indeed, they did, creatively. All repetitive exercises and most reviews of material already learned followed color-inside-the-lines pictures into the stove. By Jon Remmerde.

I Am An Unschooled Adult
By Susanna Wesley, HEM. I began unschooling the day I quit my fourth year in college.

Interview with Luz Shosie and Ned Vare
Luz Shosie and Ned Vare are longtime unschool activists. If you are not familiar with them, be sure to visit their website, Unschoolers Unlimited. By Mary Nix, HEM J/A 2008.

Laurie Chancey
I am the "Unprocessed Child" of Valerie Fitzenreiter's book and am pursuing graduate work in sociology at Louisiana State University. I have some unschooling content online and I occasionally add to it.

Life Provides Our Curriculum
We are what is known as "unstructured" homeschoolers. We trust in our son's inner drive and curiosity to compel him to learn what he needs to know. By Gail Nagasako.

One of Those Days
It is not quite 9 AM, but I can tell already that it is One of Those Days. You all know exactly what I mean - a day when the kids bicker, you feel out of sorts, and no amount of Calgon is going to take you away. - Deb Baker. [HEM]

Unchores
Unchoring does not mean chaos reigns and we are wading though dust balls and dirty tissues a foot thick. By Karen Kirkwood, HEM 5/6 03.

The Unprocessed Child: Living Without School
My book is about the childhood that we gave Laurie. It was not only a gift to her, but to us as well. In the book, I discuss sixty topics of concern that were brought to my attention by well-meaning parents throughout the past twenty years. It chronicles Laurie's life from birth to summa cum laude college graduate.

Unschooling Teens
I am a 17-year-old unschooler. I was accepted into my top-choice college and was awarded 2/3 tuition scholarship. I have had many successes in local theatre. My local community has asked me to write about how I impressed colleges and navigated the admissions process. So I am working on a Squidoo page (Squidoo is a site where users create a singular page on a topic) about unschooling teens. By Andi Enns.

Viral Learning: Reflections on the Homeschooling Life
by Mary Griffith
Mary Griffith pulls no punches with her witty insights into her life as a homeschool mom, the making of herself into a "famous homeschool author," and her part as a vital leader in the growth of homeschooling. Review by Ann Zeise.

The Unprocessed Child: Living Without School
The Unprocessed Child: Living Without School
by Valerie Fitzenreiter
Laurie Chancey spent her childhood immersing herself in topics of her own choosing. She was never forced to learn something simply because tradition and/or society said it was necessary.

by Alison McKee
This is a vivid, complex, powerful, triumphant, reassuring and moving account of a whole family's education.
